Course E015: Results-Based Management for NGOs and Humanitarian Organisations

In an era marked by rapid global changes and complex challenges, non-governmental organisations (NGOs) and humanitarian organisations are increasingly called upon to demonstrate the effectiveness and impact of their work. This course offers a comprehensive online journey, designed to equip professionals in these sectors with the essential methodologies and tools to plan, implement, and evaluate projects with a sharp focus on achieving tangible outcomes. This course enables organisations to align their efforts with their vision and mission critically, ensuring they contribute meaningfully to societal advancement and positive change.

This six-week e-learning course will equip participants with the knowledge and skills to effectively apply results-based management in their respective organisations, enabling them to design programmes that focus on achieving tangible, measurable impacts, and foster a culture of accountability and continuous improvement.

Course objectives 

  • to understand the fundamentals and importance of Results-Based Management (RBM) in enhancing the effectiveness and efficiency of NGOs and humanitarian work;
  • to acquire the skills needed for setting realistic, measurable goals and designing projects with clear outcomes and outputs;
  • to learn effective monitoring and evaluation practices to track progress, make informed decisions, and demonstrate impact;
  • to master reporting and communication strategies that promote transparency, accountability, and engagement among stakeholders;
  • to apply RBM principles through hands-on activities, case studies, and the development of an RBM plan tailored to participants’ organisations. 

Participants will gain a thorough understanding of (knowledge):

  • the RBM cycle and how it integrates with an organisation's vision and mission;
  • designing logic models and theories of change as foundations for effective programme planning;
  • methods and tools for monitoring projects and measuring their success through appropriate indicators;
  • evaluation approaches that foster learning and informed decision-making within organisations;
  • best practices in reporting and communicating project results to diverse audiences. 

By the end of the course, participants will be able to (compentencies):

  • develop and implement an RBM framework tailored to their organisation's needs;
  • create effective logic models and set measurable goals for their projects;
  • design and execute monitoring and evaluation plans that accurately assess project performance and outcomes;
  • communicate results effectively to stakeholders, enhancing organisational transparency and accountability;
  • address common RBM challenges through practical solutions and best practices.

Course format

This certificate course involves approximately 30 hours of reading, discussion, video lectures, live classroom sessions, quizzes and one written assignment, and is offered over a six-week period. This course is ideally suited for professionals working in NGOs and humanitarian organisations who are involved in project planning, implementation, and evaluation; managers and team leaders seeking to enhance their project management skills and drive their organisations toward greater impact; funding and donor agency personnel looking to understand the RBM processes of partner organisations; policy makers and government officials in charge of overseeing or liaising with NGOs and humanitarian projects; students and academics interested in the field of development work, humanitarian aid, and non-profit management. The course includes weekly 90-minute (Zoom) live classroom sessions (on Thursday's from 14h00-15h30 UTC/GMT) with the course instructors and/or guests experts. The course is based on a participatory, active learning approach, with an emphasis on critical reflection and peer-to-peer learning. Participants will do the required readings, prepare a written assignments and participate in group discussions. Case studies
 will be used to enable interactive learning and activities. The maximum number of course participants is 25. Students who successfully complete the course will receive a Certificate of Participation.
